Whenever we make vast changes to our lives it's always good to have a plan and do research from multiple perspectives. When going Zero Waste make smaller goals and move onto larger ones depending on how they result. Going Zero Waste will be better for the environment and provide savings in the long run. It would also be great for businesses to go Zero Waste as well.
A great way to start is by determining what you have and what real value it is for you. Clearing out things that are unneeded or unnecessarily take up space is a great place to start. You can donate, recycle, repurpose and even digitize needed documents. Another great thing to do is keep an inventory of your items with costs and receipts in apps such as Home Inventory, Food, Shopping.
In a highly consumptive society, the options for the things we buy are often from large stores with little care about how they are made, what materials are used, or how the products are disposed of. In a zero-waste lifestyle, participants benefit greatly from growing their food, eating a more plant-based diet, creating their own cleaning mixtures, utilizing used products, and renewable utilities, finding ways to limit non-compostable waste, and more....
Selling your items through a garage sale, pawn shop, or online. Please use caution selling online and be safe. There are also places you can take to donate your items, in which, some are listed on our recycling page. If you have any suggestions for places to donate that are somewhat nationally dispersed please let us know.
Starting a vegetable garden or planting fruit trees or bushes is a great way to start your sustainability journey. You don't need a lot of land and can use alternatives such as vertical farming and hydroponics. With the right tools, you can also start gardening indoors.
Energy consumption is one of the biggest causes of pollution on our planet. Fossil fuels such as coal and oil have devastated our planet for decades. Investing and learning to improve sustainable alternatives is a great way to decrease pollution. Solar, wind turbines, geothermal, kinetic, wave, and tidal energy could lead us to a better way of life.
Consider what you purchase and how it will be disposed of after. Try to limit your purchases. Please look to purchase items that are biodegradable, sustainable or very easily recyclable. Try to stay away from plastics and polystyrene (styrofoam). Go for bamboo products and packaging or similar biodegradables. Uncoated paper, metal, or glass are easier to recycle than plastic.
