Consumer Waste

How will we recover?

As smart as we are how and why are we the most wasteful species on the planet? When did it begin and is there a solution?

Brief History of Waste Accumulation

The oldest waste disposal method can be traced to around 3,000 BCE in Knossos, Crete. The ancient Minoans discarded their solid waste in large pits and then filled these pits with dirt over multiple levels.

Around 500 BCE, Athens established the first municipal rubbish dump. It required citizens to take garbage at least 1 mile beyond the city. In 320 BCE, another law was passed that prohibited rubbish disposal in Athens’ streets.

Current Statistics of Waste

  • Globally we dump around 2.01 billion tons of waste each year.

  • The United States produces the most trash in the world at around 1,600 pounds per person per year and has over 1,750 active landfills.

What can we do?

Recycling

Donate reusable items

Dumpster Diving

Only about 10% of waste is recycled. Why is this number so low? Can we improve the existing process? If so, what would that look like? There is not a lot of public interaction or information on how we dispose of waste, why? How much of our consumer waste is exported and to where?
